The term "intelligent networks" is almost inevitably associated with the (metropolitan) city. However, this fails to recognize that the digitization of distribution networks is just as necessary in rural areas as in urban areas. To this end, it is necessary to develop and implement appropriate strategies. Modularized and decentralized control platforms are the means of choice for this. In particular, the integration of decentralized energy generators and the intelligent control of charging infrastructures are topics that are burning on the fingers of the distribution network operators and on which the innovation magazine e|m|w.trends reports in its current issue.
But this does not only apply to the electricity grids. The intelligence of the individual network components is also becoming increasingly important in the gas network. In an interview with Jens Hüttenrauch, Team Leader Network Projects, DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH, one of the topics discussed is how sector coupling is increasingly driving forward the digitalization of distribution networks in the gas sector. The article on the system cockpit of the Designetz project, on the other hand, shows how existing plants can be integrated into a simulation of tomorrow's energy system with the help of intelligent grid technology in order to gain experience for the future today.
